At Davis Family Orthodontics our orthodontist in Rockbridge provides patients with both clear and metal braces. Either type of brace works well and neither is better than the other, it just depends on patient preference. Patients like clear braces because they are harder to see, and some like metal braces because they are more traditional.
Clear braces are also known as invisible braces. These are made from clear plastic aligners that can be removed for brushing, flossing and special occasions. Our orthodontist in Rockbridge creates custom made trays that are fitted to the patient’s teeth and given every two weeks. The teeth adjust and are gently moved into place over time. Invisible braces take about the same amount of time to adjust teeth as traditional teeth do, sometimes a little longer. Many adults opt for these kinds of braces. Metal braces have hardware such as arch wires, brackets and spacers. The hardware can be painful when it’s first put on, but eventually each patient gets used to the tightness. Metal braces are excellent for straightening teeth. Metal braces are also more visible than clear braces.
Our orthodontist in Rockbridge also offers lingual braces. Lingual braces are braces that are actually placed behind the teeth, making them completely invisible. This is referred to as the lingual side. Lingual braces can be more expensive and more time consuming. Call our offices today to speak to someone and find out how we can help you have healthier, straighter teeth. Straighter teeth are also easier to care for, leaving them less susceptible to cavities. It is harder to brush in between the cracks and gaps of teeth and gums when teeth are crooked, and bacteria tend to hide in these areas. With straighter teeth, patients can floss better and thus keep teeth clean as needed.
