As much effort as we at Davis Family Orthodontics put in, and as diligent as you are, orthodontic emergencies still come up occasionally. And when they do, be they lost or broken wires or ligatures, protruding wires, mouth irritation, or a knocked off bracket, you can turn to us, both in person and by phone, for both direct assistance and vital guidance.
Wires and ligatures that come loose, fall off, or protrude pose an imminent risk to your mouth. Sharp edges in particular are a danger. Your tongue, cheeks, and gums can be cut, leading to bleeding or even an infection. It’s important to deal with it in a timely fashion, but you should not cut the wire yourself. It’s too easy for a piece of the wire to be swallowed, resulting in a bigger emergency than the one you already have. Instead, use a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover the edge of the wire until you can get in to see our emergency orthodontist in Morrow. If you don’t have orthodontic wax, push the wire back using the eraser end of a pencil. You will find, though, that orthodontic wax is an essential tool to have when you or someone in your home wears braces. It is also useful for putting over a knocked off bracket so that it does not become stuck to your gums, cheek, or tongue. Another thing that orthodontic wax comes in handy for is as a buffer between the braces and your mouth, due to soreness caused by friction. You should always see our emergency orthodontist in Morrow as soon as possible, but in the meantime you can use over-the-counter pain medication. If you do get cut or scraped, rinse with warm salt water followed by antiseptic rinse.
